You compare fares for hours, then drive to the airport and hand over 100 EUR for a week of parking without blinking. For a lot of trips, parking is one of the biggest single line items, and it's almost always overlooked until you're staring at the barrier.

Book ahead, and never at the gate

Airport parking follows the same logic as airfares: the earliest bookings are the cheapest, and walk-up rates are brutal.

• Reserve online in advance. Pre-booked rates are frequently 30-50% cheaper than driving up and paying on the day.
• Compare on-site vs off-site lots. Off-airport parks with a shuttle are usually far cheaper than the terminal garage, and the shuttle adds only 10-15 minutes.
• Look at "park and ride" and hotel-with-parking deals. An airport hotel package that includes weeks of parking can undercut parking alone.
• Check the exact dates. Many lots price by the calendar day, so a flight that lands at 12:05 AM can cost you a whole extra day. Adjust when you can.

Match the lot to the trip length

Short trips and long trips want different choices:

1. Under 24 hours: short-stay right by the terminal often wins, because the daily rate is small and you save the shuttle faff.
2. 2-6 days: off-site long-stay with a shuttle is usually the sweet spot.
3. A week or more: compare the total against a taxi or a round-trip train, because at that length parking often loses outright.

Skip parking entirely when the maths says so

Here's the tip nobody frames as a tip: sometimes the cheapest parking is no parking.

• A return taxi to a nearby airport can beat a week of parking, with zero risk of a dead battery or a parking-lot dent.
• Public transport to the terminal, where it exists, is often a fraction of the parking cost and immune to traffic.
• A friend or family drop-off costs a coffee and a favour.
• A different airport entirely may have cheaper or free parking, or better transit, and still fly your route.
